Workshop and Other Fun Stuff!

Our first full week of Reading Workshop is complete! It went well and we enjoyed working in small groups to grow as readers (and writers!). This week in Workshop we all learned about close reading and how that helps us understand a text better. Some groups also read a poem and then chose their favorite line of that poem to be in their own mini-poem. Everyone enjoyed this activity and we had some pretty creative poems!

Also in ELA this week, we continued learning about narrative writing and the good strategies authors use in their writing. We will be writing our own personal narratives soon and we are going to try to incorporate many of the strategies we read in other stories, like Saturdays and Teacakes.

Our Class "Shelf"ie continues to be filled! Keep up the great reading everyone! Check out our progress below.

In other news ... We have a new room setup and some other new elements, too.

Test your observation skills! If you can find at least 3 new things in our room, send me an email to win a small prize! Hint: Some changes are small ... you have to look closely!

September PAWS Meeting and NEW BOOKS!

Today we had our first school-wide PAWS Meeting. Camille did a great job reading our "Words of Wisdom" for the school! After talking about grit, perseverance, and hard work in the classroom, the school played a giant game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, which was super fun!

In ELA News ... we have NEW BOOKS! Get excited! These books will be added to our classroom library on Monday ... with more to come as the year goes on. I'm excited to share these new titles with you all. Also: don't forget that on Monday we have our spelling quiz and are starting Workshop. It's going to be a great week - see you then! :)

Box Tops!

Hello Families!

North Hills has officially started our first Box Top collection race! This race runs through September 28th. The sixth grade class with the most Box Tops collected wins a donut party!

Box Tops help our school raise money for fun things like assemblies, field trips, and more! We get 10¢ for each Box Top collected.

To Collect Your Box Tops:
1. Use the form sent home with your child, fill the squares, and return it to school.
2. Collect the Box Tops in a bag, write your child's name, grade, and homeroom (Miss Strickler) on it, and send it into school.

Help us reach our goal of a donut party - send in as many Box Tops as you can! Thank you! :)

Happy National Read A Book Day!

It's National Read A Book Day! What is your favorite book to read? Check out some of ours below.

And to celebrate such a day, here's an update on Our Class Shelfie! We have almost filled our top shelf!

It's been a great week in ELA so far. As writers, we are engaging in the writing process as we create narrative stories to share. We've brainstormed ideas and are working on organizing our thoughts in a graphic organizer. Our main focus today was character development and setting the scene. We have some great story ideas and I'm excited to continue to move through the writing process. I cannot wait to see the finished products!
